Media Monitoring Report (2016 – 2018)

IHRICON has been actively involved in human rights’ monitoring, reporting, and advocacy, since its inception. IHRICON has especially focused on the issues of the rights of children and women and it has shown its active participation on the national and international campaign stage. For this, one of the major on-going activity carried out by IHRICON is media monitoring. Media monitoring program by IHRICON provides the facts and data based on the news published in various newspapers in relation to child and women rights. This can also be important as a resource publication for those who are conducting their research.

IHRICON has always acknowledged the role of media in transforming the society into a better place to live for all, especially children and women.  Thus, with the objective to analyze how the media has presented children and women issues through news, editorials and articles, IHRICON monitors news which has been published in different print media and analyzes its impact from a human rights focus. The key outcomes of media monitoring are discussed through public hearings which involves victims of human rights violations, policy planners, civil society organizations media and other concerned stakeholders.

This report consists of the news and articles published in the main daily newspapers for three years (2016-2018). The newspaper selected were: GorkhaPatra, The Himalayan Times, Samacharpatra, Kantipur and Annapurna Post. Through these national daily newspapers, the articles were collected for three years and categorized into different issues/crimes and compared with the objective to observe the trend of how effectively the media has covered the particular crime/ issues. Further, through the collection of these news articles, it is easier to determine the number of victims and the type of crime/issues women and children are facing in the country.

The following are the women crimes/ issues covered by the daily newspapers for three years.

MediaIt can be observed that media is aggressively covering the news of murder, rape and social evil practices (like boksi, dowry etc) that has been prevailing in the country. Moreover, the trend can be seen that the media is actively reporting the cases of assault.

In 2018, more number of murder and rape of children has been reported by the newspapers. However, other issues haven’t been much in focus.
